Emma raises over £1500 running the marathon

On Sunday the 17th April 2011, Emma Round - Turner crossed the finish line of the Virgin London Marathon and in doing so, raised over £1500 for The Parachute Regiment Afghanistan Trust.  Emma's motivation for completing this challenge was enduring 6 months without her fiance, Captain Ed Withey of The Third Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, who was deployed on operations in Afghanistan.  "My motivation came from wanting to give something back to all the guys who have been doing such a great job in 1,2 and 3 PARA in Afghanistan.  I felt like I wanted to try to complete something challenging too, whilst raising money for those who have suffered injuries and for the families of those who did not make it back."

Emma has spent the the last 6 months pounding the pavements around her home in London, although she suffered a serious ankle injury in the final month before the race.  "I had to lay of training all together and take a lot of painkillers on the day, so I am really pleased that I managed to get through it and get a reasonable time. The support from my friends and family was unbelievable, but what really kept me going was the knowledge that my fiance would never let me live it down if I stopped!".

Emma managed the course in 4 hours 13 minutes, which is an impressive start for a novice marathon runner.  She would like to thank everybody who has supported her so far in fundraising and urges anyone else who wants to donate that her justgiving page is staying open for the next couple of months. This can be found at http://www.justgiving.com/Emma-Round---Turner

So inspired was her fiance, that he has pledged to attempt three endurance events over the next six months.  Captain Ed Withey will be attempting the 56 mile London to Brighton footrace, The Caesers camp 50 mile loop race in Aldershot and the famous Thames Path Centurion; a 100 mile trail race that goes through the night from Richmond all the way through to Oxford.

Ed hopes to smash his previous fundraising attempts which have included the  Al Andalus 250km Ultra Trail with 3 PARA running team and the 5 peaks challenge, all of which were raising money for the Afghanistan Trust.  Donations towards Ed's challenges can be found at www.justgiving.com/Edward-Withey0/  and all money raised will go straight to wounded Parachute Regiment soldiers and their families.
